The top rules for implementing tech training programs

Part of keeping techs at your service drive means implementing successful tech training programs. M5 Management Services has compiled a list of several rules for effective tech training:

  1. It is the supervisors job to ensure that the trainee meets or exceeds their production objective on a daily basis. Make sure trainees are assigned to a group of techs who are responsible for their development.
  2. The group responsible for your trainees should receive some sort of bonus for every hour produced by the trainee over and above the trainees weekly production objective.
  3. Don’t create a specific time limit for the trainee’s training period. The period should end when the service manager and trainees feel the trainee is ready for a flat rate. For maximum success, be sure to review a trainees development every 120 days.

This plan is successful because it provides an incentive for all techs involved with the trainee to assist in their development. It also allows management to accurately forecast and monitor a trainee’s program. Additionally, it is a financially sound method that fairly rewards the trainee, other techs who assist the trainee, and the dealership.
