Do you really need more service techs?

One of the first things a service manager normally says he is in need of is more techs. M5 Management Solutions poses the question – do you really need more techs?

Before hiring more techs, take a look at your dispatching work. What type of system are you using? Did you select the right tech for the job? How long does an RO stay in your system before it is dispatched?

Another part of your store to evaluate? Time. If your tech is not at work at the required time, how can you track productivity? In the highly competitive market, your people have to be on time every day.

Now, look at the skill level of your current techs. You need to know what your techs can handle and where a job needs to go. Some techs might need additional training based on their skill level.

When it comes to special tools, get a process in place so that time is not wasted running around the shop looking for them. Cut down the wait times where possible and have someone answer your phones besides just the back counter people.

Do your advisors know how many hours are available to sell every day? If not, then you’re stuck at current production levels. It’s necessary to develop a time-bank for your advisors.

Make sure to go through that checklist before hiring a tech in order to make the best decision.
